Longtime hoisting engineer Louis Loushin joins us for this lesson in operating the Butte mines, as part of our ongoing oral history series. Aubrey Jaap interviews Louis at the Butte-Silver Bow Archives.

Today on Let’s Talk Butte, we hear excerpts of an oral history with 94-year-old Louis Loushin, a longtime hoisting engineer in the Butte mines, and Navy veteran of World War II. This interview was recorded at the Butte Silver Bow Archives as part of the ongoing Verdigris Project, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Louis is one of 100 new oral histories being recorded as part of the project.

We begin today’s show with Louis’ recollections of his parents and some of his early work in the mines. Aubrey Japp conducts the oral history.
